The bus was cramped and filled with a ripe air of old man sweat and smelly socks. A man escaping from the cops doesn't have the luxury of flying coach. I didn't mind the smell it was almost like the Bayou back at Mamas but smelled more like feet. Bumps along the road seemed to disparate as we neared the city. The dark of the night was broken up with the lights of the city and sounds were something I was going to have to get used to because it was a lot louder here than I expected.
The bus ended its rout at a shanty little bus station at Water Lue and Main Street. As we filed out of the cramped bus like sardines were being dumped from a can my feet hit the pavement I could only muster one thing "I'm on my own with a clean slate." I had gotten a small one bedroom apartment on the left side of the city near some railroad tracks I chose the place for this purpose I lived close to the tracks at mamas so I kept that part of home. It took an hour to get there because I never knew how to flag a taxi till I flashed some cash my next step was just to jump out in traffic but the cash worked. After I got to place my stuff was packed in boxes and my fold out bed was calling my name but first things first I put mamas urn on a shelf with some brick dust around it. She said it was important and you got to listen to your mama. I unfolded the bed and was asleep just as the train passed by.

The next day was unpacking my apartment there wasn't a whole lot to unpack because most of the stuff I did have only encompassed my room from back at Mama's. I arranged the room to have the most space in the center of the room to practice my staff fighting without knocking stuff over. There were times I wished for a more comfortable bed but you cant beat the maneuverability of a fold up bed you just have to sacrifice a lot of comfort. I was digging through the boxes and I found my pictures and clippings most importantly my comic book uncanny X-men #266 the introduction of gambit was there signed by Chris Claremont and Jim lee. The clippings where of home on the bayou and of my heist that sent me here.
The Heist, it was cursed from the start, I was asked to come to the next town over at to meet a this fat mob muscle and he would take me to see Nick the Face. A not so big mob boss in south Louisiana he wanted me an 3 other guys to break into a well known Jewelry store that was owned by a rival boss named Bob. there was to be a delivery of diamonds, cash, and a few luxury items such as Rolex, and other high end merchandise. Nick wanted the cash the stuff was free taking. the big thing that Nick wanted is to make sure Bob knew that Nick Robbed him. so we had to leave a presence. The other guys looked kind of like the three stooges that was there names to me. Moe had the job of disconnecting the power to cancel the silent alarm and deal with the electronic safe. Curly was the guy in charge of the get away car which was stashed a block down the road in a garage. Larry was the look out and extra hands. my job was to get the stooges into the place, unlock any manual safes and plant the evidence that it was Nick that did this.
The getting in went off with out a hitch there were vents that where big enough for me to get through after this Moe took over with the computer alarm and the silent alarm this is where things got tricky. The loot was in a big safe I'm talking not quite a Byoid brand but vary high end. Just me by myself it will take at least 2 hours I'm good but it will still take time. well the silent alarm turned off i can work with little interruption except Larry keeped asking me about my personal info and where I learned all this. about one hour into the cracking I found the safe combination on a sticky note it made me feel as useless as a crocodile with no teeth. As I opened the door I got a a nice surprise a healthy pot of money and some jewelry there was almost 250,000 dollars in this place and I wanted some more then the others so I got greedy and that is when it went down hill.
The heist was a set up i noticed something funny on Larry and his insatiable questioning where something of note. I didn't tell the others that i cracked it yet but Larry was sweating bullets and always looking off to the left of the door like he was waiting on something. My presence spooked him a little he asked "Mr.Pink what is your real name?" "What are you staring at Larry is there someone out there? and to answer your question no one knows my name not even Nick." I spotted him a small man trying to hide in a charger. I backed out of of the window and tell the people we have to move I grabbed the bag and headed out of the back there were two swat guys waiting at the back door. I quickly grab my head and as I do i held onto my Bo Staff it was collapsed in its holster on my back in a flash i had tripped the cops and was on the run they got a look at me and there was no going back. I have to leave the state.
That was then I'm here now I continue to unpack and try to remove the bad taste in my mouth from the memory and how bad I hit those cops but they shouldn't have been there. anyway I have about 50 grand left from everything that has to last till I can get a job or get a foot hold in the city. I got unpacked and decide to channel surf though the twelve channels though cable.

Maybe it is your imagination playing trick on you, maybe the A/C kicked on without you noticing. In fact you're pretty sure that's it, but did it just get colder in the room?

The television was mostly static and grainy. The channel I watched was the clearest one and it was a children's show.I cut off the T.V. and started to work out when noticed the change in temperature. It was strange unless this apartment building has central A/C because I don't have a window unit. I decided to shrug it off and take a shower. I looked at myself in the mirror a good looking man with long spiky hair my green eyes stare back at me.
The air was colder now with my wet body. I called the super "Hey man, do you know why my room is so cold?" My Cajun accent rang louder through the phone I can tell the super had to take a second to think about what I said. He responded, "Cold? This place feels like an oven. Oh wait, yeah, it's 87 degrees in here. Do you have a window unit? That could be your problem." "Oh ok, thanks." As I hang up the phone, I have a strange feeling. Feeling the soft cotton from my shirt against my skin as I got dressed was my only comfort.

It didn't take long after the shower for the temperature in the room to climb back to normal, it was now the inferno the super said it was and beads of sweat would begin to form if a fan was turned on soon, maybe even then. Before you get the chance to decide one or the other and firm knock comes at the door. Did they find you already? Was it the cops? One of the Moe, Curly or Larry? No, no that's just your nerves creeping up on you right? There is no peep hole. Guess you'll have to ignore it or open it.

The thoughts of who it could be raced in my head I grabbed my gun from the dresser and headed to the door. On first glance of the door it looked like one hard shove could cast it to splinters. I looked through the peep hole there was nothing but blackness. I thought to my self fuck.
"Who is it?" My voice seemed to carry through out the room. Beads of sweet pored down my face as the tempiture was hot or could it have been the nerves. I trusted my instincts and had covered my tracks with bribes and fake names. Hell the name at this place is under John Manhattan. Who could it be? So I just listened for a sound anything.

A timid startled voice came from the other side, a woman's. "Hi." She hesitated again, "Uh, welcome to the neighborhood." He could almost see how awkward she must be on the other side of the door. "I saw you moving in and I, uh." then she heard very low "shit, I knew it was too soon," He wasn't suppose to hear that, then she spoke loud and cheery, "I saw you moving in and wanted to welcome you to the apartments..." (If/When you open door)

I felt relieved when I Heard the voice from the other side of the door. All the thoughts that raced through my head about the police fell away. My paranoia was still there cops here are diffrent from were i come from.
I put my gun back in the dresser and opened the door. "Hello..." i stated with a pause till the words came back to me. "praline, what can I do for you." My cajun accent was fluid and enchanting.

She warmed hearing your words and handed over her casserole, "I saw you moving in," smiling, "I knew you'd be too busy to cook." She shifted on her feet a bit before she rubbed her own arm across her chest. Her hair was down, but kept out of her face and she was sleeping pants with a hoodie. could tell though she had put on make up recently. She wanted to impress him.
"I hope you like tuna casserole." She muttered after a moment of silence.

My paranoia left as she spoke softly. "Thanks for that ma'am" my accent was harsh but understandable. I grabbed the plate with both hands and was about to turn around "come on in. If you want." This was a ploy my back was turned she had all the ability to grab and arrest me.
I always listened to my mama she would have to get past my brick dust at the door but then I remembered that only works when both parties believe in hoodoo. I guess I can't rely on mamas crazy magic and have to rely on my skills. I was was waiting for anything a gun, knife, hell I was expecting even surprise sex although my mind was racing. No matter how my mind raced it was her move not mine but I was ready for anything.

Turning your back sends your hackles rising and the bead of sweat on your neck trickled slowly as the moment dragged on forever. You could almost hear her going for her concealed gun as back up sprints into the room and you go to the flow grabbing a mouth full of matted off green carpet. Everything coming to an end because of a tuna casserole.
Her first step stops your heart then, "Thank you very much," You catch a glance over your shoulder to see she's entering, no weapons, no back up. She shuts the door for you and steps to one side closer to one of two chairs that came with the apartment, but doesn't sit. Her wrist are crossed on over the other just below her waist as it is clear she is trying not to play with her shirt ends nervously.
"I am Naomi," She says suddenly as she realizes she forgot her name, her cheeks colored just a bit and you can almost see the swear she was saying in the back of her head.

I sighed with relief as she was a harmless citizen. I place the tuna salad on the counter I unwrap the tinfoil on the cover looking at the food my stomic growled since when then I realised I haven't eaten anything since the bus stoped at a Wendy's a day ago.
"So Naomi, I'm Renie." I introduce myself because I forgot to do it at the door. I open a box that had some plastic plates that look like they have been microwaved too many times. I place a scoop of tuna salid on the plate and asked. "Would you like to eat with me, there is enough for the two of us and more." My accent was harsh but understandable.

"Where are you from?" She said at the same time you ask. "Sorry." then nodded, "Yes please, I didn't know if you'd get a chance to cook the first day or so, so I made extra. She moved behind you to the other side where the counter of the kitchen ended in a bar and leaned lightly there since the chairs were lacking. "I do hope you like it."
Watching you make her plate and yours, she asks again. "Renie, where are you from." She was up beat and pleasant. "I've just never heard anyone talk that way, are you new to the country too? I am. My father is American, but I have just moved here I..." She covered her mouth and turn just a little red. "Sorry I am talking to much. I didn't let you answer the question."

I listened to her as i pulled out another plate I tried to look for one that wasn't too distorted. "I came here from the heart of Louisiana." I finished scooping her plate. "No I didn't eat at all today." I'm Cajun French by the way. What country did you come from praline?" I stated as I dug out two forks from the box of kitchen stuff. "Your fine you don't talk too much, I just don't talk often." I noticed she was very nerviness. I passed her the nice plate. "What would you like to drink?" I said as i look into the fridge "all I have is... water... I really need to go shopping." I closed the door fridge to dig back through the box to find some glasses.
"So your dad is in the army? Or what?" I said as I filled the drinks from the tap. I placed her dink on the counter and began to dig in to the tuna salad. It was good “it is very good." I said with a smile.

She waited for him to begin eating first so not to be rude, she didn't know if he prayed or what. "Oh so Louisiana is french?" She was blushing a bit, "Right? Sorry I've only been here a year and I've only been in North Carolina." She admitted. "Oh water is fine." She touched a the back of her hand to her mouth and asked, "And a napkin."
"Navy.." She answered excitedly, "I think." Her eyes looked to one side in thought. "I'm still trying to find him, its why I'm in America now."
